Nuestro personaje del Mes: Fredrik Ronquist

Bueno, tarde pero sin sueño, les dejo a continuación una entrada mensual que empieza a ser clásica en este blog, titulada Nuestro personaje del Mes.

Well this post is becoming a tradition in this blog, every month I'll post a special review of a prestigious researcher, writing down some of his/her bibliography, research areas and published papers. Hope you enjoy it. If you have comments or ideas for new researchers let me know about them.

Bueno este post lo dejo en inglés porque sé que mis "asiduos" lectores están capacitados en el idioma inglés y porque además tengo alguno que otro gringo que visita my blog.

Dr. Fredrik Ronquist
Personal data: Born 9/28/1962, married with Eva, three children born 1990 (Ebba), 1992 (Filippa) and 1995 (Axel)
Home address: 3711 Longfellow Road, Tallahassee, FL 32311, USA, (850) 878 0728
Work address: School of Computational Science, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL 32306-4120, USA, voice (850) 645 1325, fax (850) 644 0098
Email: ronquist@csit.fsu.edu

Dr. Fredrik studied a PhD in Upsala University in Sweden. He studied the comparative morphology, phylogeny, and evolution of cynipoid wasps. Then he spent few years at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm. Then He went to Florida State University in 2003 to join the computational evolutionary biology group at the School of Computational Science.

I guess Fredrick has done many stuff related to taxonomy and systematics, but he is well know because of his efforts in computational biology and phylogenetics. He got involved in the development of parsimony methods for the study of coevolution and biogeography (DIVA and TreeFitter) and more recently Bayesian MCMC methods for phylogenetic inference (MrBayes), which is coautor with John Huelsenbeck.

Nowadays he is involved in many research projects, I'll just name few ones:
1.- Extending Bayesian Phylogenetics
2.- Morphbank
3.- HymAToL
4.- PCC
5.- The Swedish Taxonomy Initiative

Also, Fredrick has been involved in teaching courses in entomology, evolutionary biology, phylogenetics and comparative genomics, mostly at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level. There are several lectures online available related to phylogenetics.

His current work address is School of Computational Science, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, where he has a lab with some students doing phylogenetic research.

Well, there are many things to say about this experienced researcher in phylogenetics, but I'm about to finish this post writing down some of his published papers, and also the link for the website of Ronquist Lab, just in case you are interested on looking for more information about him and his projects.

I guess Ronquist is our researcher of the month because he's been spent many years working on improving phylogenetic tools for analysis and for the development of software for phylogenetic research. I think MrBayes is one the outstanding tools for phylogenetic analysis, which allows us to analyse and generate hypothesis about how evolution has shaped living organisms' life on earth.

I must say, thanks Dr. Fredrick Ronquist for our efforts on this area of research: Phylogenetics.

Saludillos!

not sure I did this rite, So makeing a extra comment. LOL Little new to this. Loved the comment you left. It hardly snows here in Alabama. Loved the pic you left on the chestnut entry. And I truely love that wolf you have on your blog.
Hugs to you and yours Through out the Christmas Season and a Happy New Year to come for you and your family.
